What is self-care?

The National Institute of Mental Health describes self care as "taking the time to do things that help you live well and improve both your physical health and mental health" (2024). The term originated in the Black community during the Civil Rights era (late 1960s) with Black feminist authors like Audre Lorde - though it has been commercialized today. Learn more about the radical history of self care and its influence on political change here.

Self care is the practice of intentionally taking steps to support your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Depending where you are mentally and emotionally, self care is not always easy and it can look a little different for everyone. The following are some ways you can practice self care in your life:

  • Get regular exercise
  • Eat healthy, regular meals and stay hydrated
  • Make sleep a priority
  • Try a relaxing activity
  • Set goals and priorities
  • Practice gratitude
  • Stay connected with friends and family members
