Biography and Genealogy Master Index (BGMI)
BGMI is the best place to begin your search for biographical information because it allows you to quickly determine where to find biographies on people from all time periods, geographic locations, and fields of endeavor.

State Library of North Carolina (SLNC)
The Genealogy and Family History section of SLNC's website provides tips on how to get started on genealogy research, accessing digital and print collections, and locating other online resources.
Library of Congress (LOC)
The LOC's Local History and Genealogy Reference Services contains information about what materials are available on site, access to genealogy databases, and tips for location genealogy resources.
Smithsonian Libraries and Archives
The Smithsonian Libraries and Archives' Genealogy Research Guide includes subscription-based electronic resources as well as links to other institutions and research guides.
Documenting the American South (DocSouth)

North Carolina Genealogical Society (NCGS)
Chartered in 1974, the North Carolina Genealogical Society is open to all who are interested in genealogical or historical research.
Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society (AAHGS)
AAHGS is a nonprofit organization preserving African ancestor family history, genealogy, and cultural diversity by teaching research techniques and disseminating information throughout the community.
Olde Meck (Mecklenburg Genealogical Society)
Founded in 1981, Olde Meck assists researchers in their genealogical research and preserves records of interest to family historians.
National Genealogical Society (NGS)
Established in 1903, the NGS is dedicated to helping people find their ancestors and family stories by teaching them research and other genealogical skills.
Mecklenburg Historical Association (MHA)
The MHA preserves the history of the county and publicizes the history of Mecklenburg County. While they are not a genealogical society, they can refer you to local organizations and independent researchers who specialize in that area.
