Source Evaluation

This guide is here to help students evaluate resources to improve or build their research skills.

What is the SIFT Method?

This is one source evaluation method that is great for online resources. It is also known as the 4 Moves. With each step, you will practice how to look at a source of your choosing and see how it will or will not work for your topic search. Each letter in the acronym SIFT stands for a step.

  • S
  • I
  • F
  • T

This method of evaluating sources was created by Mike Caulfield.

  •  Stop
    • Take a second to step back at what you found.
    • Look at how the information is being presented and used.
    • Are you familiar with this organization or institution?
    • Are there other websites or databases that are talking about this topic too?
  •  Investigate
    • Look into the content of your sources.
    • Are there main ideas and themes in the resource you found?
    • What authority do the person or persons have to write on this subject?
    • Is there a reputation associated with the database or website you are using?
  • Find Better Coverage
    • Your search should lead you to multiple resources related to your topic.
    • Not every source you find will be a good fit for you.
    • Some of the sources might have claims that are in favor of or against your stance on your topic.
    • With every claim you read, make sure the information is accurate.
  •  Trace Claims, Quotes, and Media back to the Original Context
    • Follow the trail of your selected resources.
    • Look to see who originally made a claim, quote, or statement.
    • Can you find the original article, journal, or database?
    • Do you see proof of someone given credited?

LET'S PRACTICE!
