Makerspace: Policies

Access to Space

  • Access to the spaces is available during open hours. The hours are posted on our website and in the Makerspace.
  • No after-hours access is allowed. The only exceptions are the audio recording rooms, the editing room, and the green screen room which are open during regular library hours and close 30 minutes before the library closes.

General Expectations

  • The makerspace is a shared space open to everyone. Please be courteous and mindful of others in the space.
  • Use only the materials you need.
  • Ask a staff member if you are uncomfortable or unsure of what to do.
  • Report any issues or problems with equipment to makerspace or library staff.
  • Be aware of and follow all safety procedures and guidelines and follow college codes of conduct.
  • Share your knowledge and experience, if possible, and help others.

Generally Prohibited Activities

  • No content or objects that are prohibited by local, state or federal law
  • No content or objects that may be construed as having intent to harm
  • No content or objects that may infringe upon the intellectual property rights of a third party

Use of the Space

  • The makerspace is open to everyone. Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to use any or our equipment (some equipment requires training before use).
  • Community users are welcome to use the space and any equipment that does not require logging into a computer (sewing machine, embroidery machine, and general arts and craft supplies).
  • Per college policy, children must not be left unattended. Children will not be allowed use of any makerspace equipment.

Safety

Users must follow the guidelines specified for each piece of equipment.

A first aid kit is located in the Makerspace. If an emergency should occur contact College Security Services at 704-330-6911.

Storage

The makerspace does not have any short or long-term storage. You must take your projects with you when you leave. 3D prints will be held for 7 business days. They can be picked up at the service desk on the first floor of the library. If your print is not picked up within 7 days it will be considered abandoned.

Commercial Use

Commercial use or mass production are not permitted in the library makerspaces. Prototyping, experimentation, and testing are all welcome.

3D Printing Policies

  • 1 print per day maximum.
  • 3D prints can be no longer than 12 hours in length.
  • Print jobs must be sent at least 45 minutes before closing. Prints sent after that time will be started the next day/available time.
  • The makerspace uses PLA filament. We cannot guarantee a particular filament color for your prints.
  • You do not have to be present for the duration of your print. Once your print is finished it will be held for 7 business days (including Saturday). If your print is not picked up within 7 days it will be considered abandoned.
  • Printing weapon related items (includes prop items and anything resembling a weapon) or any inappropriate or explicit items will not be permitted. Decisions by Makerspace staff regarding unacceptable items are final
  • Only library staff can remove prints from the 3D printer.

Cricut/Vinyl Cutting Policies

  • Cutting or printing inappropriate or explicit items, or objects that resemble weapons will not be permitted
  • Not for commercial use or bulk manufacturing
  • No content or objects that may infringe upon the intellectual property rights of a third party
  • Items containing the Central Piedmont logo or name cannot be cut or printed

Large Format Printing Policies

  • A maximum of 3 large formats prints per day
  • Printing weapon related items or any inappropriate or explicit items will not be permitted. Decisions by Makerspace staff regarding unacceptable items are final
  • Not for commercial use/bulk manufacturing
  • No content or objects that may infringe upon the intellectual property rights of a third party.

Recording, Editing, and Green Screen Room Policies

  • A maximum of two students in an audio recording room.
  • Each room can be booked for a maximum of 2 hours per day per student.
  • After your two hours is up you may stay as long as another student doesn't have a reservation, however, be aware that after your reserved time is up you may be interrupted.
  • Rooms will open when the library opens and close 30 minutes before the library closes.
  • During Makerspace open hours (9am-4pm) you will check out the key for the room you have reserved from the staff in the Makerspace. After this time you can check out the key at the 2nd Floor Library Desk.
  • When you are finished you can return the key to the Makerspace or the 2nd Floor Library Desk.
